In Australia, the 11th of November holds a special significance. At 11:00 am on the 11th of November in 1918 fighting on the Western front ceased. The German army surrendered to the allies, effectively ending World War I. We use this day to commemorate our fallen soldiers, from the first world war, and all subsequent wars. At 11:00 am on Monday we will pay our respect to the sacrifice of those who’ve fought in wars, past and present, with a minute’s silence.
“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
-Laurence Binyon, ‘Ode of Remembrance’
