So, you are preparing yourself to tackle the University of Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET). Inforum has a variety of resources and workshops to help achieve your goal. However being proactive and doing a little extra preparation for yourself, may give you the edge you need to pass the test.
Passing the PET test obviously requires a good base of all four English skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and you can join our workshop classes to help in these areas.
So what else can you do?
1. Research the PET test online.
The Cambridge website offers a range of tips and tools to help you give yourself every opportunity, including vocabulary lists, practice tests and an FAQ page. Use these tools to familiarise yourself with the content and processes of PET to leap ahead of the game.
2. Prepare yourself physically.
The Gold Coast is the home of sun, surf and parties. We all know how much fun there is to be had on the Gold Coast but partying before an exam is a really foolish thing to do. To be at your peak performance make sure you have plenty of sleep prior to test day and keep well hydrated. (Drink lots of water) This will keep your mind sharp and help you think quickly and clearly which will be a great advantage in the speaking and listening components of the test.
3. Prepare yourself mentally.
Have a plan for test day. Remember the basic strategies you have been taught like reading the questions before you do the reading and listening components. Read the instructions for every question very carefully before answering. It is easy to throw away a good result simply because you didn’t read the instructions clearly.
On test day, time management is really important. Arrive early and stay calm. One thing that can destroy your game plan is time pressure.
Time pressure can cause panic and bad decision making, resulting in precious marks being lost.
Don’t linger on a difficult question, valuable minutes can be lost trying to find an answer that escapes your mind. Move on, you might be amazed to find another question soon after will remind you and give you the answer you couldn’t find. If you have extra time at the end of the exam you can go back to questions you found too difficult to answer.
Finally, don’t leave any questions unanswered, if you don’t know then have a guess. You might just get lucky. After all, most of the greatest successes in life are a combination of hard work, great skills and a little bit of luck.
